Turn of the Centuries - Tacoma Neighborhoods Watercolor Cursive Text Map
City of Destiny. She won the title when selected as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1873, beating out Seattle and other emerging cities in the region. Since then, Tacoma has developed as fiercely independent and innovative. Don't compare Tacoma to that city to the north! Following a renaissance of the past thirty years, Tacoma now offers a plethora of top museums, great architecture - old and new, lovely parks and a strong community spirit, in addition to a beautiful location nestled between Tahoma/Mt. Rainier and the Puget Sound.
This Map-Drawing is an homage to the neighborhoods and the citizens of Tacoma. The neighborhoods are labelled and delineated in multi-colored watercolor washes, their names written in my cursive handwriting. The balance of the map area is filled with more handwriting as I've transcribed the words of Tacomans that describe their neighborhoods. (Words sourced through my Instagram polls as well as contributions from local realtor Marguerite Martin in her research for Move to Tacoma.) A real "group effort!"
