Based on a piece by Passamaquoddy Master Basket Maker Geo Neptune, the original black ash and sweetgrass basket was designed to look like a rainbow ear of corn. Based on traditional fruit and vegetable mimicking baskets found in many ash-weaving cultures, the 12" lidded basket was a fusion of tradition and contemporary design. Originally titled "Piyaaaassskomon: Gaize" (a play on the Passamaquoddy word for corn, 'piyeskomon'), this piece represented a pivotal moment in Geo's career: choosing to weave what they envision as a non-binary Two-Spirit, rather than weaving what might appeal to more buyers. Piyaaassskomon represented the choice to make art that is visibly queer.
