Rainier rises with epic magnitude above the Cascade Range in Southwestern Washington. It is an endearing icon for many cities and towns in the region, whose citizens hope this volcano will remain dormant for a long, long time. The MOUNTAINS Collection, and this piece, is an exploration of brush + line, using the metaphorical form of MOUNTAIN to see how the marks of paintbrush and pen or pencil, with their contrasting textures, can work together to model the tactile surfaces of land.
Blue watercolor, and grey to model the fissures and gorges in Rainier’s majestic rise, with a bit of green undertones at the foot of the mount. Graphite hachures layered over the watercolor echo the forest at it’s base.
